From Floor to Ceiling - Rope Class

Rope intensive moving floor ties into partial and/or full suspension

Come explore how you can take a tie from floorplay into partial suspension, and right into the air. In this intensive, we will focus our study on a particular body shape, exploring how it can be used to bring the body from the ground and into the air. Ties will flow from floor into partial suspension, with options to intensify the unique slow-suffering found in partial suspension sequence, or lift off into the relief and intensity of full suspension.

Setting the Scene: We will begin by focusing in on a body blocking shape, developing further from Structures and Restraint into a robust and structurally stable harness suitable for suspension play. In this section, we will examine how the harness supports the body for partial and full suspension, and what elements are required vs. what can be modified to suit the individual and the desired scene. Bottoms will have the opportunity to explore active engagement within the harnesses to discover where they can make micro adjustments to best support themselves moving into the air.

Uplines 101: Before adding uplines to our harnesses, we will take a break from tying the body, to focus up on the science of uplines themselves. Students will be taugh best practices for single point upline arrangement as well as a hanger for attatchment to the body, and upline lock offs for the top and bottom of the line – testing the theory on our ever-patient chair-models. Both tops and bottoms are invited to explore uplines together to build mutual knowledge and understanding of this process.

Taking off: Finally, we will add the pieces together, elevating our harness into partials, and through to full suspension. Whether you choose to stay on the ground and explore how gravity and the oppositional force of the floor combine to elicit struggle, or lift off into the air to experience how gravity shapes and moves the body when all other supports are removed, a sequence will be provided to guide you through the process. Whether your interest is in struggle and suffering, or sensuality and support, this approach allows you to explore both through the same harnesses across different contexts.

The class will cover both technical tying and problem solving, as well as scene building supported by that tying, with skills for players on both sides of the slash. There will be time to explore and experiment to discover how these ties best work for you, your partner, and your rope scene goals.

Please note: Intensive classes are designed to accelerate learning through intensive and prolonged study. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace and listen to their bodily requirements throughout. There is never a requirement to participate in all activities, and multiple learning paths will be provided for students at different skill levels.

Prerequisites:

  • Intro to Rope and Rope Foundations (I-VI) or familiarity with basic knots and frictions (X friction, half moon friction, munter, L friction)

  • Uplines 1 or knowledge of safe uplines for partial suspension is a benefit – basic principles will be covered in the class

  • Top and bottom awareness of body mechanics and active bottoming techniques

Required materials:

  • minimum eight (8) pieces of bondage rope & bondage rope suitable for suspension (jute/reinforced jute, hemp, Hempex, POSH, or bondage nylon)

  • rope safety equipment

  • notetaking equipment

Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and at ease. We recommend opting for clothing that allows freedom of movement and flexibility. Additionally, bring along any specific equipment you may require for your personal comfort during the class.

This class requires a tying partner. Tickets are sold per person. Tickets are available on a sliding scale to promote inclusivity and accessibility. Please choose the ticket price that makes this event accessible to you. All ticket types provide the same access to the event.

This workshop is open to members only. If you don’t have your membership yet, you can sign up online or come by to see the space on one of our social nights and sign up in person. We would love to see you!

Doors will open 15 minutes before each class starts and will close 20 minutes after the start of each class.

Kosmick

@Kosmick has been getting tangled in knots most of their adult life, with an interest in the beauty and narrative power of bondage reaching back into childhood stories of damsels in distress. They began studying rope bondage in 2011, and intensified that study in 2016 after joining the Ottawa BDSM community. As an instructor, Kosmick takes an approach of breaking down classic structures and forms, with an emphasis on *why* things are tied the way they are, and an examination of the decision making processes of a tie. They are committed to demystifying rope bondage and empowering learners at all levels to experiment with what they know and pursue avenues to have fun with their rope. They view rope as a tool of expression, and look to inspire others to build connection and intimacy through their tying.

Truly

With over 10 years of experience in rope bondage spaces, Truly (she/her) is passionate about active bottoming, modular ties, and creating emotive experiences in the classroom. Primarily a rope bottom, she also has experience with tying and self-suspension. Truly’s student-centered teaching style focuses on helping rope bottoms cultivate intuitive body awareness and gain the confidence to define and communicate their specific needs. With a rich history of rope education and performance across Quebec and Ontario, she is always eager to share her love of ropecraft.
