Artistic self-ties for photography

Come take advantage of Probe’s signature furniture and décor to create a unique art piece, with your very own self-tie as the focal point! Express yourself through ropes, outfits and accessories, as captured by camera lens. Let your imagination fly!

In this art-focused class, @redselfties (any pronouns) will lead you through each step you need to create artistic photos of yourself in ropes, from start to finish. You’ll come out of this class with a new sense of what you can do by yourself – and with an art piece showcasing your self-tie!

7:00PM - 9:00PM: Rope Class

From 7pm–9pm, @redselfties will lead the group start-to-finish through the process of creating artistic self tie photos completely autonomously, using a remote shutter and a mobile device.

We’ll start by going over ways to plan for risk. Then, @redselfties will demonstrate how to execute that plan with practical tips, tricks and ties. We’ll have a brief overview of framing, lighting and staging a photo, before diving more deeply into wardrobe, tying and posing, including several practical examples of adaptable self ties that blend well with artistic posing and costuming.

9:00PM - 11:00PM: Photo Studio

From 9pm–11pm, bring out your costumes and make your vision a reality! The following pre-lit photography zones will be set up on both floors of Probe, so your tying, wardrobe and posing can really shine:

@redselfties will be on hand to consult, offer suggestions and recommendations, and ensure everyone remains as safe as possible. Some dedicated photographers and support staff will also be on hand to collaborate or offer assistance to attendees during the studio portion. Attendees who already own remote shutters and phone stands are encouraged to bring them to experiment with, though there will also some available to borrow.

As always at Probe, opt-in consent is key for this event:

• Attendees aren't ever required to be in photos or to collaborate with anyone, and they can withdraw their consent at any time.

• No photos may be taken without the explicit consent of the subject(s).

• Use rights of photos taken at the event should be negotiated between collaborators.

Self tying is the focus of this class, so partnered tying won’t be supported.

Prerequisites: Intro to Self Tie or equivalent. Rope Foundations series recommended.

Tickets are sold per person. Tickets are available on a sliding scale to promote inclusivity and accessibility. Please choose the ticket price that makes this event accessible to you. All ticket types provide the same access to the event.

Required equipment:

• Safety shears

• 2–4 pieces of rope (available from Probe if you do not have your own)

• Wardrobe, makeup and hair supplies for yourself (optional)

• Photography equipment and accessories that you may want to use (optional)

Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and at ease for the class portion. We recommend opting for clothing that allows freedom of movement and flexibility. Additionally, bring along any specific equipment you may require for your personal comfort during the class.

A Probe membership is required to take this class. Doors will open 15 minutes before the start of class.

Red

Red or @redselfties (any pronouns) has been, well, self-tying since she picked up a rope. Self-tie is a core part of his rope practice, from performances to self-scenes to using his body as a centerpiece for his art projects. Red loves sharing her passion for self-tie through instruction, skill-sharing, and mentoring, and she’s thrilled to be able to continue to do so at Probe.
