About the event
Join us for an extra special afternoon at Probe, exploring the ancient history of Queer culture with presentations by Phoebe Hancock and Madeline White.
We are so excited and honored to have these two lovely people sharing their passion for their research. Prepare to be delighted for the afternoon with them as they give you glimpses into little known histories of what queerness and sexuality looked like in our world long ago. They'll enchant you with narratives and poems they've unearthed through their studies and maybe even a love spell or two.
Presenters & Talks:
'I would know him in death, at the end of the world: ideals, expectations, and the reality of AMAB queer relationships in the ancient world'
- Madeline White is a Ph.D. student studying the origin and identity of Venus in early Roman religion. Her research examines the oppression of the goddess’ role in warfare and masculinity in order to promote traditional gender stereotypes and suppress female power. While the goddess remains her passion, Madeline also researches the history of queer AMAB people in ancient literature. Her interests lie in the difference between the ideals of queer relationships as written by ancient philosophers and the realities of queer people living out those ideals. She is passionate about empowering queer people through her research and proving that the world has always been queer – no matter what anyone says.
'By Her Soul and Heart: A Brief, New History of Queer AFAB People in the Early Years of Christianity'
- Phoebe Hancock is a researcher of the history of queer AFAB people and Early Christianity. Her international-award-winning work looks particularly at differences between how Christian men, Pagan man, and queer people saw AFAB queerness in the first 500 years CE. She is incredibly passionate about sharing the unknown history of queerness, working to give queer people back their history.
